About the flu
The “flu” is a respiratory tract infection caused by the influenza virus. The most common flu symptoms are:
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny/Stuffy nose

The symptoms may last several days or up to two weeks. The flu generally does not include nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

The vaccine does not provide protection against non-flu viruses that cause colds and other respiratory illnesses. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a cold and the flu based on symptoms alone.

The flu virus changes from year to year. You can get the flu more than once during your life. A vaccine made against the flu virus from last year may not protect you against the virus for this year. The flu vaccine is updated to include current viruses every year. Scientists try to predict what strains (types) of flu viruses are most likely to spread and cause illness each year and put these into the vaccine.

The influenza vaccine is the single best way to prevent the flu. Some people fear they can get the flu from the influenza vaccine. Flu vaccines used in the United States are made from inactivated influenza viruses. These can not make you sick, like a live virus. Some people notice mild symptoms after the flu vaccine, such as fever, malaise and muscle weakness, especially if they have not been exposed to the influenza virus before. These symptoms sometimes occur because the immune system is responding to the vaccine. The most common side effect of the flu vaccine is discomfort at the injection site which can last up to two days.

In years when the vaccine strains and the virus strains are well-matched, the influenza vaccine can reduce your chances of getting the flu by 70%-90%. If you are a healthy adult, the flu vaccine helps to prevent lost work days, keeps you from seeing your healthcare provider, and helps you from using unnecessary antibiotics. The influenza vaccine is strongly recommended for health care workers and those who provide home care to high risk individuals
